Yes, there are versions of XnView released as portable. These versions are actually in 3 forms: Minimal, Standard, and Extended. Besides Minimal, Standard and Extended offer additional features and support for image formats.
After you have downloaded a Plugin or Add-on, extract it and place the DLL file to its corresponding directory: Plugins or Addons. Reload XnView and you should have access and support for that plug-in.
There is also the possibility of downloading an automated package that installs all the available plugins at once in their correct directories. You can obtain it using the link below.
XNView doesn't have dedicated theme support, but a few elements can be customized from the Options menu. I recommend you access Tools > Options. There will be sections from where to customize various colors.
Are there any specific differences between XnView and XnViewMP? What to choose for the beginner?

A specific difference is that the XnViewMP supports more file formats than the free version (XnView). According to the developer's information, XnViewMP supports 500 file formats. For a few of them, you can also perform editing. There is also a table with all this information on the official website.
A good alternative to XnView is Picasa by Google. Picasa offers a more intuitive GUI with visual objects that allows you to manipulate and edit photos much easier. XnView is good, too, but it offers advanced functions so that the user can process their own pictures in batch mode, etc.
If you installed the application from an official source, you can find the thumb.html templates in the installation directory. Go to Computer > (C:) > Program Files > XnView > WebTemplate folder. If it is missing, I suggest you uninstall the application using Add or Remove Programs feature and download and install a new copy from the official web page.
If you already have XnView installed on your computer, uninstall it (Control Panel > Uninstall a program), reopen the Software Informer client, go to the search bar (which is positioned in the right corner of the window) and search XnView. After you pass these steps it will appear as the first program with a button that says Download. Press it and it will automatically download it for you.

I need an explicit instruction on how to install plugins in XnView. Thanks for your help.
Plugins for XnView come in form of DLL files. These DLL files are usually found in ZIP archives posted on the Support page: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?t=11715

Additionally, users frequently post modifications to the XnView interface on the following support forum: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewforum.php?f=61
You will need to browse to the mentioned forum to obtain CSS code to change the appearance of the application.

Additionally, the XnViewMP is not free. All the features in XnView are present in the MP version, only that they're tweaked and enhanced a little.
