XnView - Free set of utilities and tools for editing, modifying, converting, viewing and handling photographs, pictures, digital images, graphic files in over 400 file formats (GIF, BMP, PNG, JPG, JPEG, TIFF, PCX, ICO, IMG, PDF, PIC, PSD, RAW, RGB, TGA, and many more).

Adjustment for brightness, contrast, color balance and number of colors, resize, rotate and crop images, copy and paste, filters an special effects, customize user filters, paint canvas for touch-up and modifications, 44 languages support, audio player, customizable user interface, displays the number of unique colors in the picture, auto image size, double picture window to see the applied effects before they are active, adds water marks, picture information and text, removes red eyes, converts to gray scale and binary, removes selected color channel, color conversions, sets image as wall paper, send image by email, etc.

It also adquires and displays video from many camera formats or from scanners, slide show and web page creation, prints from any format, screen captures, etc. Drag and Drop utility, etc.

Compatible with Photoshop plug-ins. Information on supported plug-ins and formats.

Standard tools for rotating images and renaming files in bulk (batch process).

Available for many operating systems, including Pocket PC and SmartPhone.

Advantages:

  • Complete set of tools in a simple free application, supporting many image formats. It supports some image formats that aren't supported by PhotoShop. Easy user interface.

Disadvantages:

  • The viewer is a little slow for some image formats.

Excellent graphic file viewing and modifying software.
Will open just about any graphics file.
And it's free, open source.
